Like many questions, the answer depends on each individual and their unique experiences. Big feelings and challenges are a natural part of being human. At the same time, if you, your child, or your family are feeling overwhelmed or would benefit from additional support, therapy can offer a neutral, nonjudgmental space to explore emotions, build understanding, and receive guidance and care, without making you feel like you need to be “fixed.”
-
In the first session, we’ll begin getting to know one another, discussing what brings you to therapy, and answering any questions you may have about the process. Some people prefer to take things slowly, while others feel ready to dive in more deeply — we will move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. There is no expectation to share every detail of your story right away. Instead, we’ll start with what feels most important, accessible, and safe, while building trust and connection over time.
For children, the first few sessions are often focused on exploring the play space, building comfort, and developing a sense of safety within the therapeutic relationship. For families, initial time and attention will be placed on getting to know individual family members, to build trust and rapport, before coming together jointly.
-
That’s completely okay — and very common. There may be times when you’re unsure what to talk about, and we can use that space together to explore what’s been on your mind, how you’ve been feeling, or what feels most present in the moment. Therapy does not have to rely only on talking; there are many creative, experiential, and nonverbal ways to express emotions, process experiences, and work through challenges.
-
The frequency of therapy will be based on your individual needs, goals, and the level of support required for what you’re experiencing. I generally recommend starting with more frequent sessions to help build momentum, establish trust, rapport, and consistency. From there, we can collaborate to determine a schedule that feels supportive and sustainable for you.
-
There is no set length for therapy; we will work together for as long as it feels supportive to you, whether short-term or ongoing. The duration depends on your goals, progress, and the level of disruption you’re experiencing in your life. I encourage open communication and collaboration throughout your therapy journey to ensure the process continues to meet your needs.

Yes, therapy is confidential, and I cannot disclose information shared in therapy without your permission. There are, however, a few legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality, primarily related to safety concerns. These may include situations involving suspected child abuse or neglect, concerns about harm to yourself or others, or circumstances in which records are required by law or court order. If any situation affecting confidentiality were to arise, we would discuss it together whenever possible.
