What is Creative Arts Therapy?
Creative arts therapy is a way for you to explore your thoughts and feelings through drama, art, music, movement, writing, or play. You don’t have to find the “right words” or be “good” at any of these—rather, this is a different way to express what’s going on inside, in a way that feels more natural and accessible to you and your child. Whether you consider yourself an artist or not, it can be easier to share your story through images, symbols, or creative expression than it is to talk about it directly. Using storytelling and metaphor, you can begin to make sense of your experiences, gently explore what you’re carrying, and discover new meaning—at your own pace, in a way that feels safe and supportive.
More specifically, drama therapy is a dynamic, experiential approach that uses the power of storytelling, role, and imagination to support healing and growth. According to the North American Drama Therapy Association, “Drama therapy is the intentional use of dramatic arts and/or theater processes to achieve therapeutic goals… Through drama, the depth and breadth of inner experience can be actively explored and interpersonal relationship skills can be enhanced… [and] participants can expand their repertoire of roles, strengthening how they move through their own lives.”
Together, these approaches create space for you to express, understand, and reconnect with yourself in ways that feel meaningful, creative, and deeply supportive.
Creative arts therapy can be especially helpful for children, because they don’t always have the words to explain what they’re feeling—and that’s normal.
Through drawing, movement, storytelling, and indoor and outdoor play, you’ll see your child begin to express big emotions in productive ways that also feel natural to them, which allows for actionable steps forward. It gives them a safe, supportive space to explore their feelings while building confidence and emotional skills along the way.
If you’re pregnant, postpartum, or navigating early parenthood, you are likely carrying a lot that’s also hard to put into words. Creative arts therapy gives you a different way to process those feelings—without pressure, and on your own terms.
It can help you reconnect with yourself, make sense of the changes you’re experiencing, and feel more grounded and supported as you care for yourself and your family.
Creative arts therapy gives your family practical tools—like art, storytelling, play, and movement—that you can continue using in everyday life to express feelings and stay connected. These shared practices help you better understand each other, strengthen communication, and build more supportive, connected relationships over time.
In a creative arts therapy session,
You can expect a calm, supportive space where you’re invited to explore your thoughts and feelings in ways that feel comfortable to you.
I may gently guide you through creative options like art, movement, storytelling, or other expressive tools, but there’s no pressure to perform or “do it right”—you get to choose what feels most natural. There’s no one “right” way for a session to go, as each one is shaped around your unique needs, preferences, and where you are at the moment. Sessions can also take different forms, including being held outdoors.
Along the way, there’s a strong focus on yours, your child’s and family’s strengths—what’s already working, what helps you cope, and the unique ways you express yourself. You might spend time creating, reflecting, or talking about what comes up, using the creative process to better understand your experience. Sessions move at your pace, with the goal of helping you feel safe, supported, and more connected to yourself, and your healing.

I am a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist with a master’s degree in Drama Therapy, trained to use creative and expressive approaches as part of the therapeutic process. My work integrates methods like drama, art, storytelling, movement, and other expressive tools to support healing in ways that go beyond traditional talk therapy. This training is grounded in evidence-based practices and a deep understanding of how creativity can help access emotions, build insight, and support growth.

Not at all. There’s no expectation to be “good” at art or any creative activity. The focus is on expression, not skill—just showing up as you are is enough.
-
Creative arts therapy doesn’t rely only on talking. It gives you additional ways to express and process what you’re going through, which can feel more natural, especially when words are hard to find.
-
While I am not credentialed in play therapy specifically, my work is deeply informed by play as an inherent way of communication and expressions. Creative arts therapy can include elements of play, especially when working with children, but it goes beyond traditional play therapy. It integrates a range of expressive techniques like drama, art, movement, storytelling, and metaphor to support deeper exploration and connection. While play is key to the process, the focus is on using creativity in many forms to meet your unique needs.
